Wordlebuilding
A downloadable game
Wordlebuilding is a worldbuilding tool that uses Wordle mosaics to procedurally generate maps for regions of a fantasy setting, by turning each letter in the mosaic into a location. It's designed such that each map will almost always contain a few settlements or nomadic communities and many areas of wild terrain, and will likely have a few other features of interest dotted around.
You could use the maps you create using this tool to inspire new locations for your TTRPG campaign, as a writing prompt, or just something to noodle around with in your head because it pleases you. Bear in mind that these maps are unlikely to be to scale, but if you're the kind of person who likes to have detailed and accurate maps for your setting you could use these as prompts to draw out neatly later.
You will need:
- A web browser and https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle
- Whatever you would usually use to take notes or draw (pen and paper, notes app, dictation app, etc.)
- Your imagination
Accessibility info:
The print and digital PDFs contain text, one image, and one table. The screenreader-friendly .htm file only contains text, with alt text replacing the image and table. If you use a screen reader and have feedback on my alt text - or on whether or not HTML is an accessible format for you - please do let me know! I'm always trying to learn more about how to make my work as accessible as possible.
Shortly after Wordlebuilding was released, Wordle was bought by the New York Times. They’ve publicly stated that Wordle will "initially remain free", but it's likely that they'll try to monetise it in some way (whether that's through ads or paywalled content) at some point in the future. So in the interest of making Wordlebuilding as approachable as possible, here are some links to independently owned free alternatives:
- Wordle backup by github user leapofazzam123 – A complete backup of Wordle as it existed on the day of the buyout, including all the goal words that had already been chosen ahead of time
- hello wordl by Twitter user @chordbug – a Wordle clone
- Wheeldle by itch user WheelsRPGS – an infinite version of Wordle

Wow, I loved this so so much. I normally have a lot difficulty coming up with ideas for worlds but the limitations of Wordle combined with the open-endedness of the game itself made this both easy to play/use and an absolute blast!! I cannot wait to subject my players to the world I created!! I also think this could be cool to do in a group or with students, like solve the Wordle togther and then use it to power story creation/world building collaboratively. Just a super cool tool, I can't stop gushing about it!
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed it 😊 I hadn't thought about using it with students but if you or anyone else tries it I'd love to hear how it goes
